Jack Johnson is one talented man. When he's not surfing or recording laid-back, rootsy rock jams like those on his debut, Brushfire Fairytales, he's filming award-winning movies about surfing like the September Sessions. Oh, and naturally, he has a hand in its soundtrack, an eclectic and relaxing array of jam-band improvisation, bluesy licks, and jazz-flecked rhythms. Johnson's solo contributions, including a cover of Jimmy Buffett's "Pirate Looks at 40," are stripped-down acoustic numbers with as much understated grace as Jeff Buckley. Other artists opt for more adornment, like Ozomatli's percussive reggae/hip-hip fusion, the Bollywood funk horn rave-up "Ganges a Go-Go," and the hands-down highlight, Greyboy and Karl Denson collaborating on a hypnotic bite of modern jazz driven by funky, spring-fresh flute loops. Sublime may have been the forbearer of breezy oceanside atmosphere, but this fantastic soundtrack takes laissez faire vibes to new levels--and emerges as yet another building block in the foundation of Jack Johnson's rapidly emerging chill-out empire. --Annie Zaleski

Over the last seven years, Mark Knopfler and Emmylou Harris quietly recorded an album by stealing "a few precious hours of studio time here and there," as the ex-Dire Straits singer/guitarist puts it. Good thing they kept it largely under wraps--expectations would have pushed through the clouds, especially as Knopfler conjured 10 of the 12 cuts, and Harris, who writes potently, but little, contributed two ("Love and Happiness," "Belle Starr"). Yet now that it's here, All the Roadrunning--while beautiful--seems somehow underwhelming, and without a true centerpiece. Anyone familiar with the artists' famous catalogues would expect the repertoire to be poetic and brooding, and that Harris's ethereal soprano would add light to Knopfler's dark Prozac rumblings. But the surprise is that the album is too tame, never breaks out of its midtempo groove, and never takes any big chances. That said, there is much to like: The marital scrapbook romp of "This Is Us," the bluesy bickering of "Right Now," the wrenching poignancy of the 9/11-inspired ballad "If This Is Goodbye." Knopfler, ever the hypnotic guitarist, turns in some thrillingly droll and laconic vocals, and Harris brings the spirited coltishness of her early work to "Belle Starr." In the end, though, this is not so much a duet album as two famously melancholy musicians singing together--at times, strikingly so. --Alanna Nash

Recorded in Berlin and executive produced by the Pet Shop Boys' Neil Tennant, Rufus Wainwright's fifth album offers an ounce of restraint from the man that dressed up as Sir Lancelot's crossed girlfriend Lady Shallott on the cover of his last. Well, not really. Having fallen in love and curbed his self-destructive streak, the New York-born singer-songwriter has certainly sharpened his wit on Release the Stars but the songs remain as ornate and over-the-top as ever, drawing as much inspiration from opera and the musical theater as the desire to purge personal demons. So while Wainwright spends considerable time here pondering the state of the world ("Going to a Town") and his own battles with drug and sexual addiction ("Sanssouci"), every note is punctuated by a choir, orchestral swell, or big burst of brass. It wouldn't be Rufus with anything less. --Aidin Vaziri

Editorial Review

At first glance, the approach picked for De-Lovely will be familiar to
those who already own Red Hot + Blue: A Tribute to Cole Porter. On
both albums, contemporary pop stars cover classics by Porter. But many
of the interpretations on Red Hot + Blue were modernized, whereas the
approach on De-Lovely is more traditional---it's the soundtrack to a
biopic about Porter, after all, so a classic (though not quite period)
sound prevails. What's surprising is how well many of the singers
handle the songs without the crutch of a contemporary pop retooling.
Who would have thought that Alanis Morissette had such a natural
affinity for "Let's Do It (Let'sFall in Love)," for instance? She
fares equally well in her screen cameo, whereas Diana Krall sounds
superb on "Just One of Those Things" but looks horribly uncomfortable
in the film. Other good surprises include Robbie Williams's "It's
De-Lovely" and Kevin Kline as Porter, coming across as a more tuneful
Rex Harrison. Elvis Costello, meanwhile, confirms he's a better
songwriter than singer, and as Linda Porter, Ashley Judd is hesitant
at best. In a nice touch, a recording of Cole Porter himself
performing "You're the Top" provides the album's coda. --Elisabeth
Vincentelli

Manhattan Transfer's Janis Siegel swings both blues and ballads on this, her first album for Monarch. What the songs have in common is that they all dwell on the proposition of love, a universal theme that unites material by artists as disparate as Fred Astaire ("Change Partners") and Muddy Waters ("I Just Want to Make Love to You"). Siegel proves herself an adequate interpreter, despite sometimes falling into that tradition that mistakenly thinks Ethel Merman is as important as Billie Holiday. That is, sometimes the whole routine is a little stiff (especially Hank Crawford's alto solo on "The Tender Trap"). However, for the most part, Siegel has assembled a fairly good band here, featuring Crawford, Michael Brecker, Victor Lewis, and Fred Hersch (who plays nice understated piano on the album's opener, "That Old Black Magic," as well as "How Deep Is the Ocean" and a score of others). While Siegel is no Dinah Washington, she holds her own with most of the material, despite sometimes going off the deep end into swing revival fakery. But as she's been at it a long while, there's no need to doubt her authenticity. --Joe S. Harrington

From Jazziz
"The urge to marry comes upon us without warning," says Janis Siegel in reference to the Cahn and Van Huesen standard "The Tender Trap," the title cut to her new CD on Monarch Records. "For some, it is a lifelong journey of devotion, discovery, and delightful domesticity. For others, it is the triumph of hope over experience. This song is a perfect marriage of lyric and music by two masters of American song." According to Siegel, another match made in heaven is her musical association with Fred Hersch, pianist and producer for this recording. The two are joined on this program of standards by bassist Drew Gress; drummers Victor Lewis and Matt Wilson; saxophonists Michael Brecker, Hank Crawford, and Jon Gordon; guitarists Russell Malone and David Tronzo; and percussionist Frank Colon.

Take two critically acclaimed bluesmen, team them up in a recording studio, hit the 'Record' button, and listen as the magic begins to flow. Case in point: Kenny Neal and Billy Branch's new Alligator album, DOUBLE TAKE. Kenny Neal is a critically acclaimed triple-threat bluesman, whose guitar and harmonica prowess are matched note for note by his soulful singing and passionate performances. Billy Branch is among the best blues harmonica players in the world. He is a gruff and potent vocalist, a groundbreaking solo artist, a valued session player and leader of the venerable Sons Of Blues. Neal and Branch got together in a studio in France in 1998 and recorded a magnificent acoustic album (released only in Europe), paying tribute to past musicians and laying the path for a bright and uncompromising future for the blues. Now that album—DOUBLE TAKE—is finally seeing the light of day in the United States. From St. Louis Jimmy's Goin' Down Slow to the Little Walter gems My Babe (written by Willie Dixon) and I Just Keep Loving Her to Sonny Boy Williamson's Don't Start Me Talking to the originals Billy and Kenny's Stomp and Northern Man Blues, the two trade vocals in a relaxed and warm meeting of styles, riffs, whoops and hollers. Blending deep blues tradition with a contemporary, pulsating edge, Neal and Branch deliver a foot-stomping and spirited look into the blues through the eyes of two remarkable musicians who will continue to be at the forefront of the blues world for many years to come.

L. Shankar shows himself on this recording to be a master of both composition and his instrument -- a custom-made, double necked, 10-string violin capable of covering the range from violin to cello. Accompannied by Indian percussion masters Zakir Hussain on tabla and Vikku Vinayakram on ghatam, he takes the listener on an amazing, nearly 1-hour journey into the heart and soul of Indian classcal music. In his hands, the violin sings with the voice of divine inspiration, articulating more than a melody as it nudges and pulls our minds along on its journey. The effect of his vocalizing along with his instrument is absolutely transporting.

Shankar's work with John McLaughlin's ensemble Shakti is legendary -- the interplay in that group between his violin and McLaughlin's unbelievable guitar outpourings was enough to take the listener's breath away. On this, as on his other recordings as a leader, his light shines brighter than ever. ECM's production and recording quality is at its usual high level here, letting nothing stand between this incredible music and the ears of the listener.

Indian culture has a tradition of deep spirituality that goes back for thousands of years -- and their music has always played an integral role in their spiritual quest. There is a yearning in this music that comes from deep within the soul of the musician, reaching toward god, and, thankfully, touching us along the way.

"Butchering the Beatles"--featuring the BIGGEST, the BADDEST, the HEAVIEST all-star line-up ever assembled to honor what is arguably the greatest band ever--THE BEATLES. All-in-all, over 50 internationally known recording artists bring their unique bone-crushing slant to these remarkable songs. Produced by Grammy award-winning producer/guitarist Bob Kulick and ace engineer Brett Chassen, "Butchering The Beatles" features 12 new, a**-kicking versions of The Beatles' chart-topping hits including "Hey Jude," "I Feel Fine," and "Day Tripper," plus the more esoteric "Hey Bulldog," barked out by the legendary Alice Cooper and "Tomorrow Never Knows," uniquely interpreted by the iconic Billy Idol, alongside classic concept songs like "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" and "Magical Mystery Tour."When asked by Guitar Player magazine what possessed him to go all metal on The Beatles, Bob Kulick stated that, "Beatles songs are the Holy Grail. They're the best rock songs ever written. These new recordings are totally faithful, yet completely different. Billy Gibbons singing 'Revolution' or (Motorhead bassist) Lemmy singing 'Back In The USSR' are not exactly Paul McCartney or John Lennon. And of course, the guitar solo sections were lengthened to accommodate all the artists' solo styles."

Guest-star projects can be such tiresome affairs. Too often, the high-profile "friend" is nothing more than the record label's idea of someone they can feature on the front cover to generate additional sales. Additionally, these performances are frequently overdubbed, so the artist and the guest never actually come in contact with each other. Thankfully, neither is the case on Walter Trout's first studio album of new material since 2001's Go the Distance. Not only has the hotshot guitarist worked and maintained friendships with these players, but they convened in the same studio at the same time to nail these tunes. Not surprisingly, the vast majority of Trout's friends are guitarists who--like him--prefer to charge through songs with the intensity of a salmon swimming upstream. Joe Bonamassa, Bernard Allison, Guitar Shorty, Jeff Healey, Junior Watson, and Coco Montoya all share guitar-duel duties, and while the results aren't exactly subtle, there's enough explosive firepower here to level a small building. Even an acoustic session with Eric Sardinas--a neighbor of Trout's--attacks like an unplugged Rory Gallagher on a hot Belfast night. John Mayall (keyboards/vocals), James Harman (harp), Finis Tasby (vocals), Deacon Jones (Hammond B3 organ), and Little Feat drummer Richie Hayward also bring their game faces, and sometimes songs, contributing to various tracks with energy and intensity. Trout plays with his usual all-stops-out bluster, but there is an obvious affection for his guests on every track, which both energizes and spurs him on to new heights on what is arguably his best and most diverse effort yet. --Hal Horowitz

With the release of FULL CIRCLE, Walter Trout has realized a long held dream – to invite musician friends from his 35+ year career together to compose and play together. His first new studio release in five years, FULL CIRCLE reflects Walter Trout's remarkable story, from his humble beginnings as a sideman in many a blues legends' band through his rising solo star, arriving as one of blues music's beloved interpreters.

The project is a full circle in time and place, a journey through the range of styles that represent the blues music genre – a celebration of where the blues world is, where it has been and where it's going.

Among the 25 musicians appearing are John Mayall, Coco Montoya, Bernard Allison, Jeff Healey, Joe Bonamassa, Eric Sardinas, Guitar Shorty, Finis Tasby, Junior Watson, James Harman and Deacon Jones.

FULL CIRCLE is the most accomplished and satisfying release of Walter Trout's discography, and demonstrates his passion for music is just as great today as it was when he started playing as a teenager more than 35 years ago. He considers the new album a tribute to the people and the times that have helped shape his musical appreciation, demonstrating how the many styles within the blues genre can co-exist and mutually enhance each other without fight for rank or authenticity;

James Gang was a rock band formed in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1966. Though the band wasn't a huge commercial success, the fame garnered by guitarist Joe Walsh has since made the group more noticeable.

The original band members were drummer Jim Fox, bassist Tom Kriss, guitarist Ronnie Silverman, keyboardist Phil Giallombardo, and guitarist Glen Schwartz. They never officially released any material together.

In 1968 Joe Walsh replaced Schwartz when he left the band to join Pacific Gas & Electric. The band then released its debut album Yer' Album (1969). In 1970, the band released its second album James Gang Rides Again which included the hit single "Funk #49", as well as the AOR classic "The Bomber"." By this time, Dale Peters had replaced Kriss on bass. The band opened for The Who during a tour of Britain. After two more albums, Thirds (with the single "Walk Away") and the live album James Gang Live in Concert, Walsh left the band to perform solo and later join The Eagles.

Vocalist Roy Kenner and guitarist Domenic Troiano then joined the band. Troiano left to join The Guess Who and was replaced by Tommy Bolin. Bolin left in 1974 after two albums, Bang!, and Miami and joined Deep Purple. Bolin was replaced by vocalist Bubba Keith and guitarist Richard Shack, who made an album, Newborn, featuring an Elvis Presley cover, Heartbreak Hotel. The band broke up in 1976 after a final recording, Jesse Come Home, which referred to the band's namesake, the outlaw Jesse James, with the collaboration of early member Phil Giallombardo. Jim Fox was the only remaining member of the original quintet.

The "classic" lineup of the band (Walsh, Peters, Fox) reunited to perform at an election rally for Bill Clinton in 1996, appearances on The Drew Carey Show in the 1998-99 season, and at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in February 2001, drawing fans from all over the globe.

As of May 2004, Glenn Schwartz can be found playing guitar and singing Thursday nights at "Major Hooples" in the Flats, Cleveland.

In April 2006 it was announced that the Walsh/Peters/Fox lineup of the group would be touring the United States later that summer, featuring a keyboardist and backing vocalists. The trio appeared in August performing live on The Howard Stern radio show on Sirius satellite radio.

Concept discs tend to go one of two ways--they dance around a theme, causing listeners to draw their own conclusions about how well the album hangs together, or they come on strong. Sax man Dave Koz's At the Movies floats mellifluously into the second category. From the moment Judy Garland's voice comes keening through the crackle of "Over the Rainbow," we're transported directly into the cinema alongside Koz and a handful of high-wattage friends. Only in Koz's theater, the music is at times more heart-tuggingly pretty than we remember. "Moon River," from Breakfast at Tiffany's meanders gracefully before Barry Manilow surfaces to lend a languid, signature-smooth vocal. "The Shadow of Your Smile" from The Sandpiper sends ripples of bittersweetness down the spine straight through the soul. In a surprising standout track, India.Arie snakes her vocal to Tootsie's "It Might Be You" around Koz's sax so winningly you half-wish she had sung the original. Koz himself is no slouch here, either: six instrumentals belong to him exclusively, some so lush it seems a shame do-overs aren't on Oscar's radar. --Tammy La Gorce
